Infrared heating panels do not operate like conventional convection heating where the air is warmed. Instead, the panels emit far-infrared, which travels unimpeded until it hits a solid object, which will, in turn, absorb the infrared and then heat up. Infrared is 100% safe. In fact, it actually has proven medicinal benefits!

Somewhat similarly to light though, if the infrared is impeded before it reaches its destination, then the object will not warm up.

As a result, to get the most out of the heating panel it should ideally be fitted in the center of the room, or if you have a larger area and are getting a number of panels, then they should be evenly distributed in that space. The panels should be above seating areas so as not to have shadowing.

Positioning

Understanding the positioning of the panels is key to making the most out of heat energy emitted. The panels sold in our energy efficiency shop are designed for all building types whether domestic or commercial, but making sure they are positioned correctly is key to getting the most out of them.

When the panel is positioned on the wall or ceiling, the infrared radiation will travel at 45-degree angles in all directions, hence the distribution area. If they are too close to a wall then you will actually be warming a small concentrated area, which is not ideal since you will be wasting potential useful heat. For this reason, it is paramount that you don’t position the panels too close to the walls; rather ‘centre’ them as much as possible.

350watt panels should be at least 0.5m (1.5 feet) or more from the floor – and the larger panels (basically anything over 600watts) should be at least 1.5m (5 feet) away. When the panels are on they will beam the infrared up to 3m(10 feet). If you have higher ceilings, please give us a ring and we can discuss appropriate models to use in this instance.

If you install the panels on the walls, for example, if you are targeting specific cold or damp areas, then you should still try and position them as high as possible. Positioning them too low will almost certainly result in objects blocking the infrared, which will limit their heating.

Wall-Mounted Installation

To properly wall mount an infrared heating panel, follow the installation instructions below.

1. Make sure the wall is clean and flat.
2. Make sure you have all the tools required for the job (panel template, tape measure, plastic plugs, screws, drill, pencil, and screwdriver).
3. Using the tape measure, measure the position of the panel on the wall.
4. Line up the template with where the panel will be positioned on the wall.
5. Secure the corners of the template into place using a low-tech adhesive, making sure the template is flat against the wall.
6. Mark the pre-determined drill holes onto the wall.
7. Remove the tape and template from the wall, being careful not to damage the decor and then mark directly onto the wall for drilling.
8. Using the plastic plugs provided, drill the holes into the wall.
9. Fix the plastic plugs into the holes and screw in the 4.2mm counter sunk screws, leaving 6mm of screw head protruding from the wall.
10. Note the position of fixing rebates on the back of the infrared heating panel.

Position the fixing rebates in the middle of the screws and push back into position, pulling down gently to lock into place.

Ceiling-Mounted Installation

To properly mount an infrared heating panel to the ceiling, follow the installation instructions below.

1. Make sure the ceiling is clean and flat.
2. Make sure you have all the tools required for the job (panel template, tape measure, plastic plugs, screws, drill, pencil, and screwdriver).
3. Using the tape measure, measure the position of the panel on the ceiling.
4. Line up the template with where the panel will be positioned on the ceiling.
5. Secure the corners of the template into place using a low-tech adhesive, making sure the template is flat against the ceiling.
6. Mark the pre-determined drill holes onto the ceiling.
7. Remove the tape and template from the ceiling, being careful not to damage the decor and then mark directly onto the ceiling for drilling.
8. Drill holes into the ceiling with a No8 drill bit and then, for concrete or plaster board, insert the plastic plugs provided into the holes.
9. Screw the rails into place using the screws provided, making sure that the rails are fitted properly.
10. Screw the provided clips onto the back of the panel, making sure that they are completely secure.
11. Carefully lift the panel towards the ceiling, making sure that it is properly in line with the rails.
12. Gently push the panel towards the ceiling until the panel is securely fixed in place.
